Vote! EU elections 25.5.2014

Hej du som studerar på Arcada!

Sustainability, equality, freedom, cooperation, immigration, globalization, economics, human rights and environmental issues. The European Union makes decisions regarding political themes such as these. The EU makes decisions regarding your every-day life – be a part of shaping our joint EU! Vote in the European Parliament election on the 25th of May!

Som du säkert har märkt så är Europaparlamentsvalet 2014 på kommande. Förhandsröstningen har börjat och den officiella valdagen är på söndagen 25.5. Varför bör man då rösta?

Grupperingarnas röstmakt i beslutsfattandet formas enligt deras storlek.

Band Night at the Cor-house

Hello!

ASK threw a Band Night on April 10 at Cor-house in the series of “Magical Thursdays”. I hope we all had a splendid spring kick-off.

It could be that it was my first “real” gig as a planner (I’m not going to pretend it was not stressful). It could be that I flew high when many attendees claimed it was the best of ASK’s Band Night they’ve ever joined. Or perhaps it was a side-effect of hours with a couple good beers and extreme excitement filling the dense air; still, I calmed down. Anyhow, spring is warm and I’m lightheaded.

The Cor-house was full of excited music lovers and the atmosphere was great, about 80 people found their way to the Cor-house. We had decided that this musical event should be something for all K-18 students both in- and outside Arcada. I’m particularly glad to see that about a third of the attendance was from other universities. Most of the other guests were Arcada first-year students and international students; needless to say this positively
encouraged me for obvious reasons.

Forming band The Jaystayers, Simon and Jussi shaked up our mood with their humorous communication and Acoustic songs. The duet is half of the band Rambage.

Ceremonials unleashed their first Live gig ever. The vocalist/guitarist of this “Helsinki-based post-punk/postrock/indie/alternative/whatever band”  surely swept out some level of nerves after a loud applause from the audience.

The “episode” Heavy Metal began with Wrathic. The air got super electric, the folks next to me were about to stand up and dance (I got to know 1 fan of the vocalist behind the bar. Oops!)

INRI were the band I was most eager to see during the Band Night and they didn’t disappoint. Very loud, very intense and heavy as hell! Oh have I mentioned? Our main sound technician also played in INRI as a guitarist/backing vocalist.

After INRI, Per was our DJ till the end!

A special thank to the Band Crew made up by Carlos, Jenny, Oskar, Axel and Jonas for their work and the audience’s enjoyment. The Crew was one of the best teams I’ve ever worked with and hopefully I will have the privilege of working with them again.

Hope they got some practical learning experiences during the Band Night. Some pictures of their work here.

One day before the event we partly built up the stage at the Cor-house. Arcada graciously supported us with all kinds of equipment needed (light, sound, stage and a mean of transport). A real stage and a proper placement were highlights of the Band Night.

We also appreciate the very constructive feedback from the attendees,  all of them we surely take into concern in the next event.

If you would love to play in our Band Night, please contact Kim at kim@asken.fi.

Needless to say, ASK always want to hear from you to improve future events. Please feel free to send any of your opinions to Kim too.
See you guys this Thursday April 24 for the last Poker & Sauna Night of this spring.

Thank you all for your presence and support!

Styrelsen 2014/06 styrelsemedlem, intressebevakning / The Board 2014/06 Member of the Board, students' interests

1 Name? Touko Niinimäki

2. Age? 23

3. Study program? Bachelor of Social Services

4. Post on the Board? Educational and social politics

5. What are your goals for your post?
I’m interested in how society works; how we can build structures to support citizens in their daily lives, which basically revolves around studies, work, getting by economically and many other issues. I’d like to take part in ongoing discussions about how the Finnish society and our educational, work related and other political organs can provide students with equal opportunities to study and work.

6. When you were a kid, what did you want to become when you are big?
I guess I didn’t really have any dreams of being in specific a profession. From what I remember I just took it easy and went with the flow, one day at a time. I think this is a very interesting question though, as it presents cultural and socially constructed realities of different people in different countries worldwide.

7. Why are you studying in Arcada?
I was originally interested in studying both tourism (restonom) and social services (socionom) at Arcada. I’ve been intrigued by languages since childhood and though that I could use my language skills if I’d study tourism. I then found out that the tourism option would’ve probably been too commercially oriented for me, and stuck to applying for the bachelor of social services program.

Since the year of 2011, when my studies began, I’ve grown gradually more and more interested in politics, social equality, democracy, sustainability, citizenship and human rights. During my studies at Arcada I’ve found out that this study program was the right choice for me.

8. What is your favourite coffee drink?
Latte! I can drink (and enjoy?) any kind of coffee, but latte has ironically become “my cup of tea”.

9. What´s your favourite place in Helsinki?
I have many favorite spots in Helsinki, I’ve lived here all my life so far. I could name several important places, but for the most recent years I’ve spent quite a lot of time in places called libraries! Not only are they great places for studying (facebooking..), but I’m really proud that Finland supports the ideal of providing its citizens with free public libraries with thousands of books, newspapers, music records, games, movies and such to enjoy. When a welfare state is being defined, I’d say that free public libraries are an important cornerstone of such a state.

10. What is your favourite amusement park?
I haven’t been to that many amusement parks. Linnanmäki, Puuhamaa (does it count?!), Gröna lund in Sweden and Disneyland in France. Maybe some other ones too, which I can’t seem to remember. I suppose I should answer Linnanmäki since I almost live next to it, but the most memorable visit to an amusement park took place when I was around 19 years old. I’ll just say that the concept of “amusement” takes a leap towards higher grounds when you’re tipsy at Disneyland..

Styrelsen 2014/05 styrelsemedlem, tutorering / The Board 2014/05 Member of the Board, tutoring

1 Name?
Mikko Hietanen

2. Age?
22

3. Study program?
Plastteknik

4. Post on the Board?
Tutoransvarig // tutor coordinator together with Frida

5. What are your goals for your post?
I want to guide new tutors and help them organizing fun events for everyone. I´m also personally interested in how I can manage working by myself, in a group, and now in this position  holding ties of a big group.//
Så ganska samma på svenska. Jag vill hjälpa ordna roliga evenemanger åt alla och är också personligen intresserad av att ha ansvar av en lite större grupp än jag är van vid. Kommer att bli intressant och skojigt att se hur det går.

6. When you were a kid, what did you want to become when you are big?
First it was the basic dream job that kids or especially boys in my friend group dreamt of, being a firefighter but that thought died out quite quickly. What I wanted to be has constantly changed and has been affected by different times and also movies and tv-programs. It´s hard to say any exact thing what I wanted to become but some thoughts were around pilot, archaeologist, or some kind of explorer.

7. Why are you studying in Arcada?
Short and boring answer, I applied here among other places and got in. Can´t say what I study now was a long dream come through but I wanted to study something practical.

8. What is your favourite coffee drink?
A cup of juhla mokka with one teaspoon of sugar.

9. What´s your favourite place in Helsinki?
Don´t really have any particular since I´m from porvoo and have only lived one year in helsinki. I would say majstranden because I spend a lot of my free time with my friends in their apartments.

10. What is your favourite amusement park?
I have been to quite many amusement parks here in Finland as a kid so a bit tricky question. I always wanted to go to Linnanmäki once every summer so probably that one.

1 Name?
Kim Ngan Duong

2. Age?
22

3. Study program?
International Business BBA12. Love Marketing but study E-commerce

4. Post on the Board?
Events officer

5. What are your goals for your post?
To be more helpful, to bring students, particularly international students, closer to ASK and to each other thru varied events and activities, to have fun, and to plan events, yay!

6. When you were a kid, what did you want to become when you are big?
I dreamed I’d become a beautiful-influential-theoretical-physicist. Sometimes I was pleased to change to a beautiful pilot or a beautiful astronomer. All began with my consuming passion for Physics and numbers since grade 6. I invented a number of toys with simple motors like boats from styrofoam and cinematographs from old cartons. Of course back then home items were also excitingly “repaired” by me.

7. Why are you studying in Arcada?
At the time, after 2.5 years I had majored in Finance and Banking then come to a decision to quit, I turn more rational than ever in selecting university. Among my criteria, it must be a school where study programmes are fresh, flexible to be updated or restructured, and its students are provided with strong computer skills (For this point, I believe Arcada beat most other UAS around Finland). I chose Arcada. Now looking back after 2 years, I haven't regretted a minute. I’m glad that I can also learn 2 more languages in here. My study, work in ASK, friendship and great educational opportunities all make up a terrific experience.

8. What is your favourite coffee drink?
Ca phe sua da made by my mom

9. What´s your favourite place in Helsinki?
Rocky shores

10. What is your favourite amusement park?
I don’t know I feel a bit scared and lonely in amusement parks. Obviously no favourite.

Styrelsen 2014/03 styrelsemedlem, internationella ärenden/The Board 2014/03 Member of the Board, international affairs

1. Name?
Marco Eckhardt

2. Age?
24

3. Study program?
International Business

4. Post on the Board?
International Officer

5. What are your goals for your post?
Connecting people and motivating them to speak up more. Making ASK more reachable for every student.

6. When you were a kid, what did you want to become when you were big?
A Football Professional. That was the plan until I figured out many more interesting things in life as cars, engineering, management etc. The new dream is to become successful in whatever I do, if it’s entrepreneur or CEO - the main thing is to succeed and be happy with it!

7. Why are you studying in Arcada?
To me it seemed to be the best UAS in Helsinki, which offers also the possibility to learn Swedish. I’ve heard some good things about the school from friends and other people that studied here, so the decision was made and Arcada won the priority race over Haaga-Helia.

8. What is your favorite coffee drink?
I don’t go much for coffee - unless it’s free :D

9. What's your favorite place in Helsinki?
The rooftop of the building I live in (in Kamppi) / Hietaniemen Ranta - on top of the Rocks

10. What is your favorite amusement park?
Europa Park in Germany :) It has awesome roller coasters and tonnes of food!
